Shelton State Community College & CAFCT Partnership

Building Pathways From High School to High-Demand Careers

The partnership between Shelton State Community College and the C.A. Fredd Jr. Career and Technical Academy represents a forward-thinking collaboration designed to bridge secondary and postsecondary education while expanding access to high-quality career and technical training in West Alabama. Grounded in a shared commitment to educational equity, workforce development, and community advancement, this partnership establishes a seamless pipeline that connects high school students to college-level learning, industry-recognized credentials, and sustainable career pathways.

At the heart of this collaboration is the goal of creating an integrated learning experience where students at the C.A. Fredd Jr. Career and Technical Academy can earn college credit and industry certifications while still in high school. Through dual enrollment agreements and aligned curricula, students are able to participate in hands-on technical training across a range of high-demand career fields—including Health Sciences, Advanced Manufacturing, Business and Finance, Welding, Information Technology, and Engineering Technologies. These programs are strategically developed to meet the workforce needs of regional employers and to prepare students for both immediate employment and continued postsecondary education.

Shelton State Community College, with its longstanding legacy of excellence in technical and workforce education, provides state-of-the-art facilities, instructional expertise, and credentialing infrastructure to support the academy’s mission. Faculty from Shelton State collaborate with instructors at the C.A. Fredd Jr. Career and Technical Academy to align standards, ensure instructional rigor, and maintain pathways that lead directly to associate degrees, technical certificates, and eventual bachelor’s-level transfer opportunities. This dual-institution model allows students to graduate from high school both career-ready and college-prepared, significantly reducing time and cost to degree completion.

Under the leadership of Dr. Dominic Combs, Founding CEO of the C.A. Fredd Jr. Career and Technical Academy, and in partnership with Shelton State’s academic and workforce divisions, the initiative also prioritizes equity and access. Special attention is given to supporting students from historically underserved populations in West Alabama—ensuring they have access to academic advising, mentorship, and wraparound supports that promote persistence and completion. The partnership is not only about training students for jobs but also about cultivating confidence, leadership, and purpose.

Another cornerstone of the partnership is its industry-led collaboration model. Together, Shelton State and the C.A. Fredd Jr. Career and Technical Academy have engaged major regional employers, local workforce development boards, and civic organizations to guide program design, curriculum updates, and credential alignment. These partnerships ensure that training remains current with industry standards and that students gain exposure to work-based learning, apprenticeships, and internship opportunities that lead directly to employment. This real-world integration positions graduates to contribute immediately to Alabama’s economy and to drive innovation within their chosen fields.

Additionally, the partnership enhances the regional workforce ecosystem by supporting talent development in critical sectors identified by the Alabama Department of Commerce and the West AlabamaWorks regional workforce council. By combining Shelton State’s institutional resources with the academy’s innovative K–12 approach, the collaboration serves as a model for how education systems can work in tandem to close skills gaps, foster economic mobility, and promote inclusive growth across the Black Belt and beyond.

Beyond academics and workforce outcomes, the partnership also emphasizes community engagement and shared stewardship. Both institutions recognize that education is a collective enterprise—one that thrives when families, educators, employers, and civic leaders work together. Through joint community events, open houses, and advisory councils, the partnership fosters ongoing dialogue between education and industry, ensuring that programs remain responsive to the needs of both students and employers.

In summary, the partnership between Shelton State Community College and the C.A. Fredd Jr. Career and Technical Academy embodies a transformative vision for education and workforce development in Alabama. It aligns talent pipelines with opportunity, transforms classrooms into career gateways, and reimagines what is possible when institutions collaborate with purpose and integrity. Together, these two institutions are not only preparing the next generation of skilled professionals but also strengthening the foundation for economic and social progress throughout West Alabama.
